On May 7, the final day of the six-day Tour du Rouge, riders will cycle from Gonzales to New Orleans, a total of 79.3 miles.
Riders
will enjoy a rest stop in LaPlace before continuing on through
Destrehan, where the Southeast Louisiana Chapter CEO, Kay Wilkins, will
join the riders on the East Bank bike path.
The cyclists will
then continue onto the levee and into New Orleans, ending at Woldenburg
Park in the shadow of the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas. Forty-five
are completing the entire ride from Houston to New Orleans while four
are participating in the one-day ride from Gonzales to New Orleans.
All riders completing the entire ride are from out of town and many will stay throughout the weekend.
Tour du Rouge is a fully supported ride, with SAG vehicles, mechanical
assistance and Red Cross First Aid provided. The purpose of the ride is
to raise awareness and funds for American Red Cross Disaster
Preparedness along the Gulf Coast.
The
route follows the gulf coast, which was affected by Hurricanes Katrina
and Rita in 2005 and Gustav in 2008. Money is raised by the cyclists
and through corporate sponsorships. Mechanical assistance on the road
will be provided by mechanics from Bike Barn, our supporting sponsor.
