WHERE: Bayou Gauche Volunteer Fire Department Fire Station, 1st Street, Bayou Gauche
DISCUSSION: Questionable Future of the Sunset Drainage District
Parish President V.J. St. Pierre Jr. has caused a bill to be introduced at the State Legislature to allow the parish Council to be able to replace the Sunset Drainage District Board of Commissioners with the council members on Jan. 1, 2012 in order to allow the Board to become dormant so as to be able to enter into an agreement with the Lafourche Basin Levee District to have them maintain the levee.
There are no assurances that the levees will continue to be raised as the current Board has a vested interest in doing. This will put us all at a greater risk of the levee overtopping in low areas. It will make the decision to raise or fix levees a political decision instead of a need decision made by those whom the levee protects. There are no assurances that the drainage tax we pay will be removed.
Until provisions are in place to ensure that there would be no distinguishable differences between the operation of the District by the Board and the services provided by the Lafourche Basin Levee District, the law must be stopped in Baton Rouge! Your voice is needed so that Parish President St. Pierre can be convinced to have this premature bill withdrawn until all concerns are addressed.
