The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office will be participating in the National Prescription Drug Take - Back Day. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has scheduled the event to take place on April 28, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

The purpose of the event is to allow citizens to dispose of prescription drugs that may be expired or not being used for whatever reasons. More Americans abuse prescription drugs than the number of those using cocaine, hallucinogens and heroin combined, according to the National 2010 National Survey on Drug and Health.

Americans who participated in the DEA’s 2011 Prescription Take-Back event in 2011 turned in more than 377,086 pounds (188.5 tons) of unwanted or expired medications for safe and proper disposal at the 5,327 take-back sites that were available in 50 states and U.S. territories.
