Position Summary:
The Wastewater Laborer is responsible for performing general manual labor duties associated with the Wastewater Department as directed, including maintaining sewer lines, directing traffic, groundskeeping, and operating departmental equipment, while adhering to Parish safety standards.

Duties/Responsibilities:
Repairs, patches, cleans, and performs maintenance on sewer lines with basic mechanic hand tools while removing trash, roots, and other debris as needed.
Patches and repairs potholes with hand tools.
Checks and operates lift stations to ensure proper working order.
Directs traffic around working areas to ensure safety.
Collects trash around working areas as needed.
Assists with the operation of the vacuum trucks to clean lift stations and unclog sewer lines.
Provides assistance as needed for the Wastewater plant, including cleaning clarifiers and aeration basins.
Follows safety procedures, standard operating procedures, and emergency procedures for the department.
Performs general groundskeeping as needed, such as cutting grass, weed eating, landscaping, etc.
Washes and cleans Parish owned vehicles as needed.
Cleans and inspects pump stations as needed.
Perform additional duties as needed.
Competencies:
Ability to utilize tools and operate equipment necessary for the department.
Good communication skills through email, phone, in-person, and virtually with both internal and external customers.
Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
Knowledge of standard and accepted safety regulations and standards for safe working practices.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and the safety precautions associated with a wastewater treatment plant.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED required.
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Louisiana drivers’ license
Work Environment:
The primary duties of this position are performed outdoors in cold and hot temperatures, or inclement weather conditions. Exposure to chemicals, mechanical and electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes.
Physical Requirements:
Work involves moderate risks or discomforts and requires physical exertion. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or to 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Physical demand requirements are for heavy work.
