Distribution Maintenance Tech

Position Summary:
The Distribution Maintenance Technician works under the supervision of the WaterWorks Distribution Specialist and is responsible for skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of potable water lines and apparatuses. Work involves insuring that safe and potable drinking water is always available for commercial, residential, and fire protection.

Employee is considered essential personnel and must report to work if required by their manager during any Emergency or Natural Disaster occurs.

Duties/Responsibilities:
Ensures work involving the insurance of safe and potable drinking water is always available for commercial, residential and fire protection.
Completes work orders and other required reports completely and accurately.
Installs, maintains, and repairs meters, water lines, fire hydrants, valves, appurtenances, vehicles, grounds, other equipment and assigned facilities.
Performs specialized and skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of potable water lines.
Monitors the digging and construction of other agencies in the distribution system and minimizes the possibility of damage and/or contamination.
Probes ground to locate water lines.
Maintains and performs minor repair work on pumps and other equipment, re-packs valves and pumps, change oil and filters.
Reads and records meter readings. May remove and replace water meters.
Assist in pressure testing, flushing, chlorination and sampling of distribution piping.
Maintains assigned tools and equipment.
Assists St. Charles GIS in updating WaterWorks maps.
Attend pre-construction meetings for new developments.
Provides 24 hour on call emergency duty. Must be on call and work overtime as required.
Perform additional duties as needed.

Competencies:
Knowledge of Water Distribution System operating procedures.
Knowledge of the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment.
Knowledge of some Excel, Outlook, and WaterWorks GIS software.
Knowledge of standard and accepted safety regulations and standards for safe working practices.
Ability to perform heavy manual tasks under varying conditions.
Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions.
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, and the public.
Skilled in the use of shop equipment, hand and power tools.
Skilled in the use of a variety of grounds maintenance tools and equipment.
Skilled in the operation of Heavy Equipment including but not limited to Dump truck, Excavator, Backhoe, Skid steer, and Forklift.
Skilled in preparing reports and maintaining records.

Education and Experience:
High school graduation or GED equivalent
1 - 2 years of experience in related field and/or mechanical work in a water distribution environment.

Licenses and Certifications:
Class A Commercial Driver’s License

Work Environment:
The primary duties of this position are performed mostly outdoors. May work in controlled temperature conditions, cold and hot temperatures, or inclement weather conditions. Exposure to chemicals, mechanical and electrical hazards, moving mechanical parts and hazardous physical substances and fumes. Potential exposure to risk of electrical shock, vibration, fumes, airborne particles, and infectious diseases. Reports to work during severe weather. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Physical Requirements:
This position requires lifting and carrying of objects up to 100 pounds with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of frequent reaching, standing, kneeling, crouching, walking, talking, balancing, seeing, hearing, smelling, and touching; work is typically performed in outdoor environments, with exposure to adverse weather conditions. The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee will be subject to loud noise levels.
