Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness
About Emergency Preparedness
Home of the only 24/7 Emergency Operations Center in the state of Louisiana, the Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness actively works to provide a comprehensive emergency management program.
It also maintains relationships with local, regional, state and national agencies to ensure the team is prepared for any emergency, including weather, industrial, chemical or manmade-related incidents.
The Emergency Operations Center aims to continually find ways to make residents more knowledgeable about protecting themselves in an emergency.
Be Prepared
Hurricane Preparedness
St. Charles Parish, with its low elevation and close proximity to open water on both East and West Banks, remains uniquely vulnerable to all types of hurricane threats.
Emergency Alerts
SCP Alerts helps keep residents, businesses and visitors better prepared and able to respond more quickly and confidently to critical incidents. Sign Up Today for texts, e-mails, and calls.
Floodplain Management
St. Charles Parish is a participating community in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and as such, flood insurance is available to St. Charles Parish residents.
Emergency Sirens
At noon on the first Thursday of every month, the St. Charles Parish Emergency Operations Center performs a one-minute test of the parish's outdoor warning sirens.
The sirens are owned and maintained by the Waterford 3 nuclear facility. Waterford 3 has allowed St. Charles Parish to use the sirens for other emergency situations, including tornado warnings, hurricane events and any other event that poses an immediate and severe threat to the community.
If you are a St. Charles Parish resident and believe that one of the sirens is not functioning correctly, please contact the EOC at (985) 783-5050.
Please remember that the sirens are outdoor warning sirens and may not be heard indoors in all situations or in areas that are geographically far from the sirens.
